What is Character?

In order to understand Character Code™, we must understand the definition of two words. The first is Character. The second is Code.

The Cambridge Dictionary defines Character as the particular combination of qualities in someone or something that makes them or it different from others. To obtain a deeper understanding, it is important to give consideration to the historical origin of this word.

Character is an Ancient Greek word which was spelt “Kharakter”. A Kharakter was quite literally a branding iron, an instrument used for marking, or the specific imprint left on finished products such as coins.

In today’s world, when we think about tools, we often think about pens, stethoscopes, or even tractors as tools. Rarely do we consider that the thoughts, words, and behaviours of a leader can also be regarded as tools. For instance, a CEO by virtue of their position could quite easily use their tongue as a tool to crush the confidence of a trainee employee. Likewise, a HR lead could also their behaviour as a tool to affect the emotions of their direct reports in a negative way.

These daily and seemingly ordinary interactions become tools comparable to “Kharakter” that leaves an indelible mark on employees in such organisations. In daily interactions, leaders have the opportunity to build trust and encourage belonging within the organisation.

The second word code is defined by the Cambridge dictionary as a system of words, letters, or signs used to represent a message in secret form, or a system of numbers, letters or signals used to represent something in a shorter or more convenient form.

A code is often easier to decode when it is visible. However, it is commonly the case, people related challenges, can be classed as secret or invisible to leaders. There are often unwritten codes of operation that apply across the organisation along with sub-sets of codes within individual teams and departments.

Character Code™ is therefore a framework to help organisations build trust with those they lead. Character Code™ provides leaders with principles which can help them perceive their world in order to become leaders of influence.

The consistent practice of these principles will increase the likelihood of personal and professional improvements.

Character Code™ helps leaders leave an imprint on people which is both positive and etched indelibly on the minds of those they meet and lead.

Leaders should therefore be interested in Character Code™, because it provides them with a compass on how to navigate their lives on and off the job.

So, as you navigate your day, I invite you to reflect on this question with me: What imprint am I leaving on those I lead?
